Institutional issues
For the first part of my coursework research I am going to be analysing music videos from independent labels, major labels and homemade music videos.Independent music videos or mostly known as "indie" which are independent musicians who are signed with small label companies such as "Cherry Red" which is a music labeled based in London, musicians such as Thomas Leer are signed with them. How ever these videos made will lack in elements such as CGI in their videos and will not have extravagant content like someone who would be signed to a major label such as "Def Jam" which have signed musicians such as Rihanna and Jay-z. This would be because independent labels are limited to what they can achieve in their videos and also have less money to spend on the videos, which often means they wont become as successful as larger label videos. Two major music labels could be the likes of Syco which is owned by Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment and Def Jam which was founded by Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons. Syco has signed music artists such as Labrinth, One Direction and Leona Lewis. Then Def Jam has artists signed such as Rihanna, Ludacris, Scar Face and Jay-z. These artists have a big advantage to those artists who are signed by smaller music labels because the bigger labels have more money to be able to spend on the videos so can add more effects to the video, the videos are also going to have more cleaner editing techniques.
